“Be afraid. Be very afraid.” Those words were cemented into pop culture after the release of the 1986 sci-fi horror film The Fly. Over the years, its reputation as a terrifying story with amazing special effects has only broadened its appeal. Now, director David Cronenberg and composer Howard Shore bring this tale to the opera house.
The major deviation from the movie is that the opera is set in the 1950s. Other than that, fans of the film will already be familiar with the opera’s plot: Seth Brundle, a brilliant but awkward scientist, has invented a teleportation device. But when he steps into himself—and a housefly follows him inside the telepod doors—he emerges on the other side as something less than human.
The film this opera is based on was actually a remake of a 1958 film of the same name starring Vincent Price. But while the original was relatively tame, the Cronenberg film used special effects to turn actor Jeff Goldblum into a progressively more disturbing fly-man hybrid. Opera tickets to this show are sure to be thrilling. Get The Fly tickets while you still can.
